I am Chris Mount. I have always had an interest in buildings and designing. This started from a young age when I used to help out on building sites for my Uncle and Granddad. However, I got my first real taste for architecture during sixth form when I redesigned an old church into a home, producing plans, sections, visuals and a 1:20 model.
After A levels I went travelling for a year before going to study architecture at Nottingham Trent University. I graduated in 2010. My final project was a Spa based in Matlock, which utilised the naturally occurring hot springs and focused on producing areas, spaces and pools that evoked different and specific emotions through the use of lighting, materiality and also sound, taste and smell. I did my dissertation on the senses, specifically blindness, looking at how the world is perceived through blind peoples’ eyes, and how architecture affects them. It also made me interested in being able to design more for all the senses rather than just visually. My interests also lie in the ageing process of materials, the ability to design energy efficient buildings that have low impact on their surroundings and are self-sufficient; and structures that are moveable/quick build.
Since graduating I worked at GSS Architecture for 11 months, a commercial practice based in Kettering. I worked on masterplan schemes, schools, some house builds and church renovations. I have since moved to a practice called HAP Architects in High Wycombe, I am gaining invaluable technical knowledge of small to medium sized builds and the planning process.
I chose DS10 as I am interested in being able to design efficient structures with the aid of computer technology and parametric modelling. I want to develop my computer skills and look forward to manufacturing with the use of laser cutting and 3D Printing. I am excited about the projects and builds and look forward to the year.
