Joe Magri received his BA(Hons) in architecture from the university of Plymouth in 2010. His final year project was on a secondary school which received recognition by the BSF programme and featured in their summer education conference. During his undergraduate degree, he developed a strong passion for modelling and building which saw him travel to Umbria in Italy to design and construct an amphitheatre all from resources found on site. In addition he has recently signed up for the Dartmoor Arts spatial structures course where he will assist in a team to construct a 1:1 pavilion.
His written work explored the notion of architecture as an image, through the writings of Jean Baudrilard and Mitchell Schwarzer he was interested in society’s shift towards a ‘hyper reality’ mode of living, which has resulted in a senseless understanding of the built environment. Recently he has become more interested by the work of Michael Pawlyn in the field of Biomimicry.
Since graduating Joe completed his part I placement at Roberts Limbick, based in Gloucestershire. Throughout this period he predominately worked in the education sector, assisting in the design and technical output of an 8 million pound primary school. In addition to this Joe advanced his 3D modelling skills in 3D Studio Max, which has expanded his passion to learn and experiment further with digital tools. During his time at Westminster University he will also be working at an architectural charity called, Article 25 where projects are based in unique locations and require innovative ideas with minimal resources to succeed.
Joe’s desire to be a part of unit 10 was driven by the opportunity to experiment on a physical and digital level which is all grounded by a sustainable and resourceful attitude. I am keen to develop architectural ideas which adopts a ‘closed loop’ system and is motivated by the light weight and elegant limits found in nature.
